Market Preview October 25th

What a wonderfully busy season we've had this year, with new vendors, new customers, and new events, we've sure been busy over these past 5 months! We couldn't have had such a successful season without our wonderful sponsors who enabled us to schedule and plan events each week, provide tents for our special events, and allow us to advertise and create new signage for our market. But most importantly, we wouldn't have had the wonderful season that we had without YOU, our devoted customers. With a move to a new Wednesday location, we were a bit worried with how our customer numbers would change, but you showed us that no matter where we are, the Indiana Community appreciates local foods!! We know that it's more convenient to shop at a one-stop shop grocery store for all your food needs, and often times less expensive, but we appreciate and value your support for our local farmers and local food makers. You know that local tastes better and IS better for you, you know that when you support a local farmer you are keeping the money in your community, and you know that it IS more enjoyable to shop at your local farmers market, and we love that!!

We are always looking for new and exciting ideas for future markets, so if you are a community group that would like more exposure, email us and we can start talking about next year's Community Tent, it's FREE! Are you interested in planning and presenting children's activities at the market, while at the same time promoting your organization, well email us and let us know you're interested in the Kid's Tent for next year! Are you a local musician or artist who wants more exposure, well we have FREE tents for you too! Just email us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.

With all the things that we do at the market, we are always looking for more helpers, currently there are just two of us, two community volunteers, who make all that you see possible with the help of our vendors. And one of our community volunteers is going to be trying her hand at farming next year, so she'll be more preoccupied with selling at the market than planning events, so we could use your help! If you're interested in helping with this wonderful community event, please contact us!!

This is the LAST market of the season, please stop out to get your last hand at local goods and to say goodbye until next year to your favorite vendors! See you Saturday!!!

Market Preview October 18th

Sorry for the hiatus on blog updates, but with a new baby and a new farming adventure, we've been a little busy! I wanted to at least update the blog once more before the 2014 market season is over!  We have two Saturday markets left, and then we'll have to wait through a long winter before we can start dreaming about fresh picked lettuces, onions, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, and more!

The market has been smaller with the number of vendors decreasing as we near the end of the season due to slower crop production.  We do have a good number of vendors left who have a variety of produce to offer! Check out the varieties of gourds and pumpkins available, the different kinds of apples and pears, and crisp greens.  Also check out the different kinds of root vegetables that are left, like carrots, onions, and potatoes.  This link will give you ideas and ways to store these vegetables all winter, a small way to enjoy the market through these cold winter months ahead!  Also you can find a delicious recipe that uses butternut squash and apples to make a creamy soup that can warm up any cold autumn day!

Market Preview Sept 17 & 20

This weekend we are welcoming the return of our extra tents with three tents scheduled and a huge collaboration event with PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture) and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank called Harvest for the Hungry.  With the help of community volunteers and YOU, we will be collecting produce to donate to our local food bank. We will also have live music thanks to a market favorite, Tim Ball's one-man-band, Snapology will be featured at our Kid's tent with activities, and the Community tent will feature again the First Annual IUP SEEDS Club Community Seed Swap.
At our Wednesday market you will find The League of Women Voters registering community members to vote and FREE blood pressure screening thanks to Beacon Ridge nurses!
We are still looking for artists, musicians, community groups, and children's activites to schedule events in our extra tents for September and October. If you are interested in participating in one of our tents, please email us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.  If you know of anyone or any organization that would be interested in participating in a Saturday market, please spread the word that we are scheduling now!

With the changing of seasons, things are also changing around the market. You'll notice that our Wednesday market is getting a bit smaller, with many vendors not having enough produce to sell at both markets, and you'll notice a lot more pumpkins, gourds, and squash, a true sign of the autumn season!  We hope to see you at the market this week, and note that we only have 3 Wednesday markets left in the season.  Our Saturday markets will run all the way through October.

Market Preview Sept 3 & 6

The Kid's Tent was a HUGE success at the market on Saturday, around 30 kids stopped by and made their own ice cream with the help of IUP dietetic interns and the Department of Food and Nutrition professor Jodie Seybold! We had a new artist, Richard Roberts, who had some fantastic abstract work made from wax. The League of Women Voters was also present in our Community Tent registering community members to vote!

Returning this week to our Wednesday market, you will be able to have a FREE blood pressure screening thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge.  This Saturday we do not have anyone scheduled in our Artist, Musician, Community, or Kid's Tent.  We are starting to schedule events in our extra tents for September and October. If you are interested in participating in one of our tents, please email us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.  If you know of anyone or any organization that would be interested in participating in a Saturday market, please spread the word that we are scheduling now!

There is an exciting event happening in downtown Indiana that you should definitely check out after the market Saturday morning!  Starting at 10 AM on Saturday is the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival.  Some of our vendors will be selling at this festival rather than at the market on Saturday.  This event starts Friday evening and runs all day and into the night Saturday. A wonderful event that brings live music, arts, crafts, and foods to the heart of downtown! Check out their website to see a full schedule of events and activities, Northern Appalachian Folk Festival.

Market Preview August 27 & 30

The rain held off this week for both of our market days, and we noticed some new customers at our Saturday market, possibly IUP students and parents in for the move-in weekend. We hope with IUP back in session, we will be seeing more students frequent the market, a great healthy community oriented event that everyone can enjoy!  On Saturday we had a lot of interest in our Community Tent where Master Food Preserver, Marcy Cunkelman, discussed the appropriate ways to preserve summer's harvest. We hope to have Marcy attend the market again later in the season when people are getting ready to start canning late summer produce!  Our musician, Tim Ball's One-Man-Band, was rocking all market and our customers really appreciated his playing!

Again this week at the Wednesday market you will be able to have a FREE blood pressure screening thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge. ***Wednesday we will still have the market even though it's fair week and our parking lot is used for fair parking. You will find us in our same lot, just moved slightly towards the Wayne Avenue side (rather than the Hospital Road side) to accommodate for fair parking. Just look for our market tents!***  This Saturday we will have the League of Women Voters in our Community Tent, new artist Richard Roberts in our Artisan Tent, and Food Science fun in our Kid's Tent brought to you by IUP Food and Nutrition Professor Jodie Seybold!

Market Preview August 20th & 23rd

Basket winner
Face paint
We would like to thank all of our wonderful customers who came out and supported the market for our annual Customer Appreciation Event! It was a great success! We gave away 100 reusable farmers' market tote bags, samples upon samples of sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, bread, pepper jelly and relish, and apples, and Cassandra Williams was our lucky winner out of more than 100 entries of the market basket giveaway!  It was quite the basket and arm-full!!  Amanda Brubaker, the 2013 Indiana County Fair Queen, distributed fair handouts and painted dozens of faces in our Kid's Tent.  Our musician, Christian, was joined by fellow musicians throughout the morning and put on quite the lively and entertaining show all market (he didn't sit down once!!). And our artisan sold a number of her handmade rugs, a unique art tent to the market this season!  It was our busiest Saturday yet and we thank you for your continuous support!
For the next two Wednesdays we will have FREE blood pressure screenings at the market thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge.  We also wanted to be sure that you know during fair week (8/24-8/30) we WILL still be at our Wednesday location, which is used as a parking lot for the fair, so be sure to stop by!  This Saturday we will have a Master Food Preserver at the market teaching proper techniques and distributing handouts on ways to preserve summer's bounty of produce, this should be an educational demonstration that I know many of us will appreciate!  Our artist and musician tents will be filled this Saturday and our Kid's Tent will have Gatti Pharmacy with children's activities and handouts, be sure to check it out!

Each week I set-up and take down our 4 extra tents (Kids, Community, Artisan, and Musician), but once September rolls around you may find these tents vacant because I will be on leave due to the upcoming arrival of a new baby.  We are trying to think of a place to safely leave these tents near the Saturday market site so we can continue to schedule events in the tents, but have our tent occupants set them up and take them down themselves. We'd like to store them somewhere close by so the tents could continue to be set up, but we are not sure where.  If you have any suggestions, we would be glad to hear them! I've been happy to schedule all these events this season, and hope to continue once I take a leave of absence with the new baby.  Hopefully I'll see you at the market Saturday, it all depends on this baby's time table now!  Thanks for your words of encouragement, they are appreciated!

From hot to sweet, we'll have the freshest peppers around for you to sample, along with pepper relish from Natalie's Goodies and bread and cucumbers from Country Bread Barn and 3 Ponds Farm to help soothe your mouth if you dare to try a hot one!!!  We will be giving away Indiana County Farmers' Market reusable shopping bags to the first 100 market customers filled with a PA produce cookbook, market recipes, and buying local handouts! One of my favorite go-to recipes for this time of year is quick, simple, and can be eaten many ways!  It's fresh hot peppers (hungarian wax, banana peppers, etc) chopped up with fresh diced tomatoes (cherry, cocktail, or larger tomatoes), with a drizzle of olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic, and fresh herbs of your choice (I like parsley and basil).  Serve this over lettuce, eat it plain, or my favorite on a thick slice of italian bread!!!  Enjoy :)

Market Preview August 6 & 9

This week is National Farmers Market week, and a way to celebrate is to come out and support your local farmers market! You can go to this website and pledge to spend money at the Indiana County Farmers' Market and receive a free "No Farms No Food" bumper sticker for pledging, and then take the next step and come on out to our Wednesday and Saturday markets and shop locally!! I Love My Farmers Market celebration!

As promised here is what you can expect at our annual Customer Appreciation Day, this year scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, 9:00-noon.  Our taste testing event this year will feature a produce favorite that is as versatile in taste as it is in ways to prepare it, but we like it raw the best. It comes in many colors, green, yellow, red, orange, purple, and more! It even has it's own scale for heat, that's right, it's peppers!!  From hot to sweet, we'll have the freshest peppers around for you to sample, along with pepper relish from Natalie's Goodies and bread and cucumbers from Country Bread Barn and 3 Ponds Farm to help soothe your mouth if you dare to try a hot one!!!  Along with the samples, we will be giving away Indiana County Farmers' Market reusable shopping bags to the first 100 market customers filled with a PA produce cookbook, market recipes, and buying local handouts! It should be a wonderful event, so come early and stay awhile, thank you for supporting your local farmers' market!!

Last Saturday at the market we saw two groups of children participate in yoga demonstrated by Ed Stancombe of Sunflower Yoga Studios.  In our Community Tent the First UU Church raised awareness and money for their Stop Hunger campaign, and we had a nice turnout of customers on the beautifully sunny morning.

This Saturday at the market we will have the Indiana Garden Club in our Kid's Tent with some take home garden goodies for our children customers! Our Community Tent will feature the Seed Bank where you can learn more about their mission and the seed swap they are planning!! And our Artisan Tent will feature two artists who were here at the very beginning of the market season, Ashely Bouton and Tyler Rahl, be sure to stop by and check out their awesome paintings!!

Market Preview July 30 & August 2

Martha Crenshaw
Nicole Dann
Last week was another successful week at the Indiana County Farmers' Market, and we have YOU our devoted customers to thank! At our Wednesday market we had dietitian Martha Crenshaw from IRMC who distributed infused water samples and on Saturday we had dietitian Nicole Dann who also made infused water samples and discussed healthier alternatives to store bought drinks (as well as a cheaper alternative!) We had a crowd of children who made good/bad bug bookmarks and learned about some of the helpful and harmful bugs that can be found in gardens.  Our artist was Nancy Heath with stained glass that was beautiful!
If (when) we start scheduling artists for September and October, we hope to bring back some of our favorites again! (If you were wondering, I'm due in September so the Community, Artist, Musician, and Kid's Tents are only scheduled currently through August because I will be on leave for at least a little while with the new baby!)

We are excited to start planning and preparing for our annual Customer Appreciation Day, which is going to be held earlier this year on August 16!!  We have a lot of exciting giveaways, activities, and food sampling planned, but we will reveal all the details next week, just be sure to mark your calendar because it's coming up quick!  *We are looking for some volunteers, 2-3, who might be interested and able to help us with face painting in our kid's tent. You don't need to be an artist, we will have stencils, but we do need help since I will be occupied with the samples and giveaways.  Please email us or talk to me on Saturday if you're able to help, indianafarmmarket@gmail.com *

This week Sunflower Yoga Studio instructor Ed Stancombe will be back with yoga for everyone at 9:15 and 10:15, come prepared to learn some standing poses and relaxing breathing techniques! We will also welcome back artisan Chere Winneck-Shawer with her jewelry and bags and a new musician to the market, Andrew Mack!  Our Community Tent will feature the First UU Church of Indiana, PA and their social justice team.

Market Preview July 23 & 26

Our market crowds have continued to surprise us, and even with the all day rain we had on Saturday, the crowd was still there!  Our musician, Christian Jerman, really entertained and our artisan had a lot of success!  Last week we visited our last two farms, A&L Produce and Jeff's Produce, check out their bio pages to learn more about where your food is coming from!!  I also wanted to note that last week I had a misprint, Eagle Run Farm has an EBT machine that accepts SNAP cards; HOWEVER, it does not work to accept SNAP at our market, only at the other market they are a part of, sorry for any confusion. His machine does accept credit and debit cards at our market though.  We are hoping to have our own equipment next year to be able to accept SNAP.

At the Wednesday market this week we will have artisan Crystal Miller back for the third and final time, so be sure to come prepared if you've been interested in her work the past couple of Wednesdays. We will also have an IRMC dietitian in our Community Tent with healthy living tips.  Saturday's market is fully booked with Sean Howard playing in our Musician Tent, Nancy Heath who creates stained glass in our Artisan Tent, a food and nutrition specialist, Nicole Dann, in our Community Tent, and an interactive learning experience for children on good and bad bugs in the garden in our Kid's Tent  presented by Penn State Master Gardeners Cindy Hatcher and myself (parents you can learn a bit from this too!!)  Below is our list of vendors who will be present at the market this week.

With my daughter Madelyn's third birthday coming up and with the copious amounts of zucchini that we've been harvesting, I'm going to share with you a recipe that I plan on using to make healthy chocolate zucchini cupcakes! This recipe is for a quick bread, but can be easily adapted into cupcakes, just shorten the cooking time a bit.

Here is also a recipe that uses zucchini and/or summer squash that we've tried this week with great success, think stuffed peppers but with zucchini!

After last Wednesday's market I decided to prepare a delicious greek themed dinner that was amazingly simple and super quick to put together.  And above all it was great tasting and so refreshing on a hot summer evening!  I'll include the links to the three recipes I used.
quick summer meal
Here's a quick rundown of what the dinner consisted of:  Grilled greek zucchini or squash (I added feta on top at the end until it melted slightly), grilled greek marinated chicken, cucumber tzatziki, and I added a freshly chopped tomato and pepper as sides that went great with every aspect of the meal, hope you enjoy!!
