Week of October 3 & 6

As we move into October, change is in the air - the weather is cooling, leaves are just beginning the change color, and the market enters its final month of the season.  We hope you will continue to join us and enjoy all the local foods that autumn has to offer!

You might also notice that our special booths are wrapping up for the season.  Many thanks to all who provided music, children's activities, information, and shared their artwork this year - more than 20 different individuals/groups joined us for special booths in the 2018 season!

The market is OPEN this Saturday, so be sure to stop by and see us before or after the Homecoming Parade - we're only a block away!

Last week, IUP's Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND) shared healthy snack recipes in the kids' booth.  Families made their own spider snacks and fruity cat hat snacks - YUM!

This Wednesday, October 3rd, is our FINAL WEDNESDAY market of the season.  Saturday markets continue through the end of the month.

This week, we also celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Week.  A dedicated team of volunteers have staffed our card swipe booth all season, so if you've shopped with a credit, debit, or EBT card this season, you have them to thank!!  The market is entirely volunteer-run, so we are so grateful to have these wonderful folks on board.

Calling all local artists!!

The Market will host an Arts Day in conjunction with our regular farmers' market on
Saturday, October 13th.
It is FREE to participate, but space is limited.

September 26 & 29

It's sure feeling like fall now, and we're seeing it at the market, too!  More pumpkins, winter squash, gourds, and corn are arriving!  Many asked about availability of apples last week.  We are uncertain whether our regular vendor (Sleepy Hollow Orchard) will be able to return this season, but we'll let you know if they do!

Thank you to all who supported Harvest for the Hungry last Saturday.  We collected fresh market
foods, as well as cash donations.  Special thanks, as well, to Mahoning Creek Farm, Leap's Farm, 3 Ponds Farm, and other vendors who contributed to the food pantry!

Color To Dye For, IUP Dietetics Interns, IRMC's Institute for Healthy Living, the Indiana Free Library, and local musicians Country Blue helped to make this a great event and a really fun morning at the market - thank you!

This week, be sure the stop by the Wednesday market - only 2 more chances to shop!  Our Saturday market will continue through the end of October.

Saturday, we welcome the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND) to the Kids' Booth.  Families can stop in to make a snack and play a fun nutrition matching game.

Harvest for the Hungry

Did you know...
  • 1 in 8 Pennsylvanians struggle with hunger (14.4% of the population)
  • 1 in 6 children in Pennsylvania struggles with hunger
  • In Indiana County, more than 12,500 people are food-insecure, including 3,200 children
Read on to learn more about how you can help!

Last week, The League of Women Voters of Indiana County had a voter registration booth and shared information about efforts to stop gerrymandering through Fair Districts PA.

Below, you can also find a recipe for gazpacho (courtesy of IRMC's Institute for Healthy Living).  The best news - you can find almost all of the ingredients at the farmers' market!

Harvest for the Hungry
is this Saturday!

September is Hunger Action Month (Feeding America), so each fall, we host a day of action at our market.

The USDA defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.  Children, seniors, and people living in rural areas are at particular risk for food insecurity and hunger.

So, how can you help this weekend?

It's easy!!  Simply purchase extra food items from our market vendors and drop them off at the market information booth (the same booth where you swipe your credit/debit/EBT card for tokens).

All donations will go to the food pantry at Zion Lutheran.

Then, be sure to enjoy the other special booths and activities happening at the event.

  • Learn how to prepare healthy food on a budget with IUP Dietetics interns
  • Stop by the storytime with the Indiana Free Library
  • Shop handmade jewelry, tie dye, and seasonal decor items by Color to Dye For
  • Enjoy live music by County Blue - an acoustic country and bluegrass duo (and new market favorite!)

Some of vendors will participate, as well, including Mahoning Creek Farm.  They will donate 10% of their total sales (in meat products) this Saturday to the food pantry.

See you at the market!

Part-time vendor Tony's Orchard joined us for the first time this season with locally grown gala apples.

This week you can register to vote in the community booth, courtesy of the League of Women Voters of Indiana County

Save the Date!
Harvest for the Hungry is Saturday, September 22nd!!

September is Hunger Action Month, so we set aside one day each year to collect donations for a local food pantry.  Just purchase extra food at the market and drop it off in the market booth.

There will also be live music, cooking demonstrations, and storytime for the kids.  Bring the whole family to a fun morning at the market, and help fight hunger in our community!

Week of 8/29 & 9/1

Welcome back IUP!  Your summer may be over, but our season is still in full swing.  Whether you've been shopping with us since June or have been away for awhile, be sure to stop by the market to see what's new!

Summer produce is still at it's peak, but we're also seeing some of our fall favorites coming in!  This week brought the first apples of the year, as well as several varieties of fall/winter squash.

This week is also Fair Week.  The Wednesday market will be OPEN at our regular time and place (3:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the lot across from the KCAC - along with fair parking), with a limited number of vendors.  Hope to see you there!

In case you missed it (or if you really enjoyed it) at Customer Appreciation Day earlier this month, IRMC's Institute for Healthy Living handed out samples of a delicious tabbouleh.  It makes for a great, light summer salad or side dish.  Try this recipe with fresh ingredients from the market.  You can also substitute your grain of preference, trading out the bulgar for rice, quinoa, or nothing at all.

This Saturday, a new artisan joins us at the market.  Dolores Lezark will be selling a variety of toothbrush rugs.  Stop in and take a look!

As always, you can swipe your credit, debit, or EBT card for market tokens in the market information booth.  Vendors who accept tokens will have a sign posted in their booths.
