Week of July 21

This week's post will be short and sweet (as your friendly blogger has been on vacation).  We are hitting the peak of the season now, so if you haven't been to the market for awhile, this is the perfect time to come back!

This Saturday, we welcome Penna Flower Company to the artisan booth.  They are a modern day florist, creating beautiful bouquets and wreaths using the highest quality flowers.

WIC and the Power Up Nutrition Program join us again in the community booth.  WIC staff will be on hand to assist clients in receiving and redeeming vouchers for the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), which are accepted by many of our vendors.

They share the space with the Power Up Nutrition Education Program.  Power-up provides no-cost nutrition education, recipes, and food demonstrations and tastings to highlight local produce.

As always, you can swipe your credit, debit, or EBT card for market tokens in the market information booth.  Vendors who accept tokens will have a sign posted in their booths.

In case you missed them, here are some great recipes shared by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank a couple weeks ago.  Try them out using your favorite market veggies!

See you at the market!

Week of July 11 & 14

Kids' Day on Saturday was so much fun!  Thank you to all who participated - community groups who provided free activities, vendors who joined in on the fun, and all of our amazing customers made for a lively morning...and the sunshine didn't hurt, either!

The market booth hosted the "Great Veggie Hunt", as children searched for a different vegetable in every vendor's booth.  We also offered a challenging game matching whole grains to their ground versions, courtesy of Leap's Farm.

The musical stylings of Dan Stonerook were the perfect soundtrack for a beautiful market day.
The Children's Advisory Commission of Indiana County taught us how long it really takes to grow a pizza and provided a fun farm-themed photo op, bookmarks, and stamping for the kiddos.
SQUAD Jr. led a fun art and science experience where little artists could create pigments and pictures using fresh flowers - provided by our vendors!

Debby LeeAnn Johnson Bennett, a local consultant for Usborne Books & More, had a great selection of books for storytimes throughout the morning.
The Girl Scouts of Western PA had fun, handmade dragonflies and airplanes to decorate with markers, jewels, and more.  They also shared information about the Girl Scouts' day camp at Blue Spruce Park and how to get involved with Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts here in Indiana.
Finally, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was on hand with information about SNAP benefits, recipes, and a fun food group matching game!

In produce-related news, garlic is arriving, and we are seeing lots more summer fruits and veggies come into season, including blueberries, black raspberries, cucumbers, and sweet corn!  Come and pick up your favorites!

This Saturday, we welcome back Country Blue, an acoustic duo playing a mix of country and bluegrass music.

See you at the market!

The fun doesn't stop after the 4th - join us Saturday for a morning of fun, FREE activities at our annual Kids' Day event!

Planned activities and special booths include:
Remember to stop by our market information booth, too!  Kids can pick up a scavenger hunt sheet and search for different veggies in each vendor booth as you shop.  We'll also have activity sheets and a fun game with locally-milled grains!

Of course, we'll still be swiping credit, debit, and EBT cards for tokens to spend with participating vendors.
