Market preview 8/28 & 8/31

Last Saturday was one of our busiest days at the market yet, and I have to think it had something to do with our magnificent guest chef Nick Karas from Nap's Cucina Mia.  He prepared some off-the-cuff, delicious recipes using market produce right from farmer's hand to chef's table! The crowd may also have been due to the beautiful weather we experienced on Saturday, always making for an enjoyable trip to the market. At lease four of our vendors sold completely out of all of the produce they brought, so a huge THANK YOU to YOU the customer, it's always a good sign when we have vendors selling out, it means we have huge community support!!! We hope to bring chef Nick Karas back for another visit, I know many market patrons & vendors were pleased to see how they could use their fresh produce to create delicious meals.
Coming back this Saturday to the artisans booth is Chere Winnek-Shawer selling beautifully hand crafted jewelry and scarves.  We are also hoping for Sleepy Hollow Orchard to return with their apples and peaches, the rain this season has made it hard for their produce.  You can look forward to giant watermelons and cantaloupe from a couple of our vendors, as well as all your favorite summer vegetables.  *Remember, in just under a month we'll be having our Customer Appreciation Day Saturday, September 21, mark your calendars!*
If you would like to be added to our E-newsletter list please email us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.    On our E-newsletter you'll find this information, plus relevant farm/environmental articles/current issues, and upcoming local Indiana events.
I'll be late to the market this week due to the the Race Against Child Abuse 5K on the Hoodlebug Trail, there's still time to register for this worthy cause presented by the CARE Center of Indiana County.

Recipes to take home and try...Focusing on my favorite market produce, the tomato!!
Fried Green Tomatoes -- A lady at the market on Saturday was asking Nick how to prepare green tomatoes, so I decided to share a green tomato recipe with everyone!
Market produce you'll need--green tomatoes
Watermelon Peach Tomato Salsa -- A recipe that uses up a lot of market produce and is a yummy alternative to your normal salsa.
Market produce you'll need--tomatoes, peaches, watermelons, basil, chives
Quick Corn Avocado Black Bean Tomato Salad-- This quick dish can be prepared in minutes and is so delicious chilled on a warm summer evening.  Using raw corn on the cob, chop off the corn kernals and place them in a bowl with chopped avocado, rinsed black beans, chopped cherry tomatoes, snipped basil and oregano.  Splash with a bit of olive oil, and either lemon juice, lime juice, or red wine vinegar.  Add salt and pepper and voila!

Market preview 8/21 & 8/24

With the month of August already half-way over, it seems like summer is quickly slipping away, but there are still a lot of events to look forward to at the farmers' market!  This Saturday we will have Nap's Cucina Mia chef Nick Karas presenting a food demonstration using fresh market produce and giving away some delicious samples.  Nick will be at the market by 9, so mark your calendars, you won't want to miss this!
There are talks under way about the farmers market vendors being present for the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, a two-day event held right here in Indiana the weekend of September 6-7.  Vendors may be selling along the 500 block of Philadelphia Street, which is going to be closed off to traffic during this festival.  Check back soon to see if our vendors will be selling at the festival too.
Remember to tell your friends and family about the Farmers' Market Customer Appreciation Day, September 21, with a wide range of activities, live music, all our vendors (plus some), and market freebies!! One more event to look forward to is the Indiana Community Garden's fundraising event on September 28. The garden will be pairing with Cozy Corner Cafe and will be having a salsa taste testing event at the market, all donations will go to the Indiana Community Garden.
It's an exciting time of the year and a very busy time of the year (back-to-school, the Indiana County Fair, etc), but please make time in your busy schedule to come check out the market and support local foods and vendors!!!

Market Preview August 7 & 10

Sneak peak of my visit to
3 Ponds Farm

There was a small crowd that trickled into the farmers' market this past Saturday most likely because of the rain that trickled down from the sky.  Our newest vendor selling Kettle Corn was still quite a hit, with owners Mike and Becky from Derry, PA enticing customers with smells of freshly popped kettle and caramel corn!  There are even talks about a possibility of selling roast beef sandwiches in the near future (using beef from a local farm in Derry!)  Check out the latest farmer bio of 3 Ponds Farm, where Madelyn and I visited on Monday.  Also, this week may be the first week for peaches at the market from Sleepy Hollow Orchard, fingers crossed!  We will have wonderful live music by Melville Walbeck who play folk, grassroots, and alternative country.  It'll sure be a wonderful market week with such nice weather that we've been having!

Recipes to take home and try...

Shaker Pickles--As promised, here is the recipe that my neighbor gave me to try with my excess cucumbers, and apparently if you don't like bread & butter or sweet pickles, you will still like these.
6 medium onions sliced thine, 6 cucumbers, 1/2 cup salt, 3 1/2 cups sugar, 3 cups white vinegar, 1 tsp each celery seed, mustard seed, turmeric, alum powder.  Put onions and cucumbers in a gallon wide-mouthed jar. Mix the remaining ingredients together until sugar dissolves and pour over cucumbers and onions.  Put in refrigerator and shake everyday for six days, ready on day 7. (By the way, I've been devouring my jar of garlic dill pickles (last weeks' recipe), they are crunchy and flavorful!!)
Ingredients you'll need from the market--cucumbers and onions

Whole Wheat Banana Zucchini Bread--I am making a couple loaves of this to freeze and bring on vacation with my family, a great way to use up some excess zucchini!  (Did you know you can grate zucchini in large amounts and freeze them to use in the future for breads, muffins, soups, stews, meat loafs, etc.  Don't let those zucchinis go to waste!)
Ingredients you'll need from the market--zucchini & eggs

Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes--I've been picking cherry tomatoes from my garden by the basket full, so here are some neat ways to use cherry tomatoes as appetizers with many different filling options.
Ingredients you'll need from the market--cherry tomatoes and a variety of herbs and garlic (depending on which fillings you choose)
