Week of August 26 & 29

This week will be an action-packed week at the market!  We hope you will join us for our annual Customer Appreciation Day this Saturday.  The market could not succeed without all of you – our loyal customers!

Last week was one of rain, sun, and lots of fun!  Saturday morning, dietetics students from IUP filled our kids’ tent with Veggie Smash!  Kids came through to mix ingredients into a baggie and smash them up to make their very own hummus.  There were also veggie samples for tasting and recipe cards to take home.

The Center for Community Growth occupied our community tent and shared information on their upcoming film series.  You can catch the first film of the year, “Rich Hill” at the Indiana Theater this Friday at 6:30 p.m.  We even called in to the Center’s weekly radio show, live from the market!

While we have had a lot of excitement this week, we are sad to say that for some of our vendors the market season is coming to an end.  Saturday, we said goodbye for now to Peterson Produce.  This coming Saturday is likely to be the last market day for Eagle Run Farm, so be sure to stop by and see them.  Among their regular offerings, they also have beautiful purple beans and bell peppers that you’ve gotta try!
This week, there will be even more going on, including our annual Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 29th.
Musician:  Christian Jerman
Artisan:  Sami “Dancey Pancey” Dream Catchers

In addition to our regularly scheduled special tents, we will also have yoga and nutrition sessions, information on preventing back pain, chair massages, DoTerra essential oils, and a make-and-take meat rub with Mahoning Creek Farm.  You can find more information about these special events and services at the end of this post.

You can also enter a drawing to win a basket filled with fresh, local, delicious market goodies!  It is sure to be a fun day for the entire family!

Save the date! Saturday, September 26 is our Harvest for the Hungry event at the market.  Market shoppers can purchase an extra item or two (or however many you choose) to donate to the food bank at Zion Lutheran church.  We are currently looking for volunteers to help on the day of the event.  Volunteer tasks include walking around the market and spreading the word, helping to sort donations, and delivering donations to Zion Lutheran.  If you are willing to help out for a 1-hour shift (or longer if you’d like), please contact us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.

See you at the market!

Ed Stancombe of Sunflower Yoga will lead brief early, mid, and late-morning yoga sessions.  Sunflower Yoga has been operating in downtown Indiana since 2008 and offers a variety of classes for all levels.

Nutrition Sessions are presented by Lori Smith, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator through the Corporate and Community Wellness program at IRMC.  Her sessions will focus on incorporating fruits and vegetables as the seasons change, as well as how to make healthy eating cost-effective and convenient.

Join Chiropractor, Dr. Kolby Mumau, DC of Indiana TotalTherapy for an informative session on preventing back pain.

August 19 & 22

August 19 & 22

Last week, we enjoyed welcoming a new vendor to the market!  Eden Apiaries sells local honey in a variety of flavors and sizes “From the Garden of Eden”, as well as maple syrup.  Eight Maples Farm had pears for sale, and lamb is back at Mahoning Creek Farm!

Thanks to Texas Ted and Jenna Vendetta, with Doc Pober, for another great performance!

First Unitarian Universalist Church of Indiana shared ways that we can all help fight childhood hunger in Indiana County, including:

  • Fill a child’s backpack with food
  • Plant a row of your favorite vegetable and donate it
  • Start a food drive for ICCAP or the Love Basket
  • Give money or grocery cards to ICCAP or the Love Basket
  • Plant seeds to create seedlings to donate to the Seedling Project
  • Donate your time to harvest produce

To get involved, contact the Social Justice Project at www.firstuu-indianapa.org

Coming this week:

This Saturday, August 22, we hope you will stop by the kids’ tent for recipes and food samples and have a chat with the folks from the Center for Community Growth.

The Center for Community Growth seeks to lead individuals and organizations in and around Indiana County to advance social, racial, gender, LGBTQIA, economic, and environmental justice.  The Center actively engages people of diverse philosophies, faiths, and backgrounds to work together to form a more fair, equitable, and sustainable community.

August 12 & 15

Hello everyone, Jenna here.  Thank you for having me as your new market volunteer.  I am excited to spend even more time at the market and talking with our wonderful farmers, vendors, artisans, musicians, and community members!

We had gorgeous weather at the market this week and some beautiful flowers and produce to match!  We’re seeing more summer fruits, including peaches and lots of melons.  Apple season is also just around the corner, and we should be seeing more of them from Sleepy Hollow Orchard within the next few weeks.

Now is also a great time to think about making some pickles or finding other fun ways to preserve some of this year’s harvest.

Saturday brought lovely music from Texas Ted and Jenna Vendetta with guest Doc Pober and a new artisan, Jennifer Braughler, with lots of fun, creative items.

This Saturday, August 15, the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Indiana will be in our community tent.  The Church is grounded in love, support and acceptance and is committed to promoting compassion and responsible thought and action in the world.  Please stop by and say hello!
