Market preview July 24 & 27

Blueberry season is among us, and has been for a little while now. Last week a group of us with small children went to Stutzman's Farm for a morning of blueberry picking, and there's nothing like a blueberry right off the bush! It was a wonderful experience for everyone, so if you have a time you can go out there picking you should check it out! If you don't have time, don't worry, a number of our vendors sell fresh picked blueberries at the market! There is a lot going on in Indiana this weekend, but be sure to stop at the market first thing Wednesday and in the morning Saturday to get all your produce needs! After you stop at the market on Saturday, be sure to head on over to the Indiana Community Gardens at Mack Park for their first Taste and Tour ICG Garden event!  There will be activity stations on creating a garden, identifying plants, eating garden goodies, composting, and using rain barrels.

In the next couple weeks and into September there will be some special happenings at the market.
First, on Saturday, August 3 we will have chef Nick Karas from Nap's Cucina Mia preparing fresh, delicious food samples from produce taken directly from the vendors.  Watch him as he prepares a delicious dish and stay for the samples!
Next, sometime early in September, the Indiana Community Garden will be pairing with Cozy Corner Cafe for some salsa sampling in the market's community booth.  Try the different levels of heat in the salsa made by the Cozy Corner Cafe which will be using ICG grown tomatoes, and give a small donation to keep the garden a growing success!
Finally, we have a huge event planned for our customer appreciation day at the market on Saturday, September 21! The YMCA will have a kids corner with activities for children, there will be a giveaway of a market goods basket, free farmers' market gear, music provided by Coastal Remedy, a possible tomato themed day full of tomato taste-testing from various vendors, and the Home Made Ice Cream truck will be there as well!  It is sure to be an exciting and fun-filled morning at the market, thanking YOU our customers who show your support by coming to the market each and every week!  Be sure to look around town for flyers advertising our event!

Recipes to try...
I've been overwhelmed with cucumbers just from my own garden, so I've found some creative ways to use them all up before I bite the bullet and start canning pickles!
Orzo Cucumber Salad (After I made this I realized it is so much better without the orzo, just eating it with cucumbers is delicious!!)
Market produce you'll need:  scallions, parsley, cucumber
Market produce you'll need:  scallions, cucumber, jalapeno, basil
Beets & Bacon--A recipe that I had the pleasure to try from Peterson's Produce last Saturday.  Fry 4 slices of bacon, cut up.  Add 1/2 onion and fry.  Add juice from beets, dash of salt and pepper, 1 Tbl vinegar, 3 Tbl sugar, and 1 Tbl cornstartch.  Stir until mixture thickens. Grate whole beets into sauce, simmer together, serve hot (from crockpot).
Market produce you'll need:  beets
