Market preview July 31 & August 3 (Chef Demo Rescheduled)

Last Saturday at the market we had a large and steady crowd coming through, that is until the massive downpour of rain started and continued until the end of the market! At least someone enjoyed playing in the rain!

We have a very very exciting week at the market!!  On Wednesday Sleepy Hollow Orchard, a vendor I'm sure many of you have been waiting patiently for, will arrive and will be here until the end of the season with fresh picked fruits, starting with plums and apples!  On Saturday we will have another new vendor selling Kettle Corn (!!!) as well as having a guest appearance from chef Nick Karas of Nap's Cucina Mia!  He will be using fresh market produce for a food demonstration and will be giving out samples! **Due to scheduling conflicts, we are going to have to reschedule our food demonstration by Nap's Cucina Mia chef Nick Karas.  Check back later to see when he will be at the market, thank you!** Saturday we will also have live music by Sean Howard, who has been our connection for local musicians working hard to schedule musicians each week!  There will be no artist on Saturday, but check out the calendar and/or artisan/musician tabs to see which artists will be returning for a second showing at the market.

Blueberry Scones -- One of Janet Huber's (3 Ponds Farm) customers used her blueberries to bake the most delicious scone I've ever had the pleasure to try, I don't have her recipe (yet) but wanted to post one for others to try, enjoy!
Ingredients you'll need from the market:  blueberries

Refrigerator Garlic Dill Pickles -- I just made these today so I won't know how they taste until a week from now, but if you'd rather not take the time to can and don't have an over abundance of cucumbers, this recipe was simple and can be made quickly! (Next week I'll post a Shaker Pickle recipe I got from my neighbor)
2012-06-26-Pickles01.jpgIngredients you'll need from the market:  pickling cucumbers, dill, garlic

Roasted Vegetable and Refried Bean Tostadas
Roasted Vegetable & Refried Beans Tostadas -- A delicious way to use a wide variety of summer vegetables.  I even made my own refried beans for this the last time I made it, not that I'll spend all that time again, but it was delicious!
Ingredients you'll need from the market:  zucchini, peppers, other vegetables you like roasting (beets, eggplant, carrots, onions...)

Market preview July 24 & 27

Blueberry season is among us, and has been for a little while now. Last week a group of us with small children went to Stutzman's Farm for a morning of blueberry picking, and there's nothing like a blueberry right off the bush! It was a wonderful experience for everyone, so if you have a time you can go out there picking you should check it out! If you don't have time, don't worry, a number of our vendors sell fresh picked blueberries at the market! There is a lot going on in Indiana this weekend, but be sure to stop at the market first thing Wednesday and in the morning Saturday to get all your produce needs! After you stop at the market on Saturday, be sure to head on over to the Indiana Community Gardens at Mack Park for their first Taste and Tour ICG Garden event!  There will be activity stations on creating a garden, identifying plants, eating garden goodies, composting, and using rain barrels.

In the next couple weeks and into September there will be some special happenings at the market.
First, on Saturday, August 3 we will have chef Nick Karas from Nap's Cucina Mia preparing fresh, delicious food samples from produce taken directly from the vendors.  Watch him as he prepares a delicious dish and stay for the samples!
Next, sometime early in September, the Indiana Community Garden will be pairing with Cozy Corner Cafe for some salsa sampling in the market's community booth.  Try the different levels of heat in the salsa made by the Cozy Corner Cafe which will be using ICG grown tomatoes, and give a small donation to keep the garden a growing success!
Finally, we have a huge event planned for our customer appreciation day at the market on Saturday, September 21! The YMCA will have a kids corner with activities for children, there will be a giveaway of a market goods basket, free farmers' market gear, music provided by Coastal Remedy, a possible tomato themed day full of tomato taste-testing from various vendors, and the Home Made Ice Cream truck will be there as well!  It is sure to be an exciting and fun-filled morning at the market, thanking YOU our customers who show your support by coming to the market each and every week!  Be sure to look around town for flyers advertising our event!

I've been overwhelmed with cucumbers just from my own garden, so I've found some creative ways to use them all up before I bite the bullet and start canning pickles!

Market produce you'll need:  scallions, cucumber, jalapeno, basil
Beets & Bacon--A recipe that I had the pleasure to try from Peterson's Produce last Saturday.  Fry 4 slices of bacon, cut up.  Add 1/2 onion and fry.  Add juice from beets, dash of salt and pepper, 1 Tbl vinegar, 3 Tbl sugar, and 1 Tbl cornstartch.  Stir until mixture thickens. Grate whole beets into sauce, simmer together, serve hot (from crockpot).

Market preview July 17 & 20

With temperatures reaching the near 90s this week you may be tempted to stay inside with the cool air conditioning or spend your afternoons relaxing poolside, but brave the heat to check out what we have at the market this week, and cool down with Home Made's Ice Cream on Wednesday!
Zucchini season is truly among us, for fellow gardeners I'm sure you know what it's like to find out one zucchini you missed picking has turned into a baseball bat sized zucchini, and at the market you'll find zucchini galore as well!  I have had zucchini five nights in a row, but in five different forms (you got to keep things interesting!)  Just this morning I added some leftover zucchini to a banana/berry smoothie and it blended right in!  If you have some awesome zucchini recipes, please share them!
This weekend we will have live music by Hiram and the Walkers (Judy and Ken Holiday) as well as a new artisan, Matt Williams, who makes some creative and beautiful bird houses!

*If you are looking for something to do this Thursday, check out downtown's Taste and Tour of all the local restaurants that line the streets of Indiana.  Ask your chefs, "Do you buy produce locally?" and encourage the discussion of keeping things local!!*
*Saturday is the Citizens Helping Citizens 5K starting right beside the market, be sure to come early if you want some goodies before the runners finish their race! :) *

***Mark your calendars, Nap's Cucina Mia chef Nick Karas will be at the market Saturday, August 3 for a food demonstration and sampling using fresh market produce!!!!***

Come for the food and stay for the social gathering that is the farmers' market!

Market Preview for July 10 and 13

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing holiday weekend, and that you were able to spend time outdoors with friends and family despite the heat! The market was quite busy last Wednesday with customers stocking up for their 4th of July weekend!
Saturday was a bit on the slower side, but there were two special attractions at the market, Tim Ball's one-man-band, and
Chere Winnek-Shawer's handmade jewelry and accessories.  The jewelry was a huge attraction that drew in numerous customers and quite a bit of pieces were sold. Chere Winnek-Shawer may make another appearance at the market sometime in August, so check back to see when!

*I attended the Borough Council meeting last week and spoke in favor of our farmers' market and why farmers' markets are good for communities.  I also suggested that the farmers' market could use the new 7th street location for next year's Wednesday markets to increase space (and visibility!) A small bit was written in the newspaper about my statement, and we noticed a turn of heads from many council members when I stated that the farmers' market has been turning away Wednesday vendors due to lack of space.  Above all we need our communities support to keep the farmers' market a happening place in Indiana. If you're reading my blog then you probably already shop at the market and know the importance of it, so what I'm asking you is to spread the word.  Let others know why you think farmers' markets are special and how crucial it is to know where your food is coming from.*

Roasted Beet and Barley Salad

Tomato and Banana Pepper side--no formal recipe here, just something that you can find at my dinner table and my parents dinner table every night in the summer.  Cut up tomatoes and hot banana peppers, mix with a bit of salt and a dash of olive oil.  Spoon onto fresh bread and enjoy!!

Recipes, recipes, recipes galore!
Cabbage Spring Rolls:  For a quick lunch this week I made a yummy and refreshing cabbage spring roll with some leftover produce from Saturday's market.  It's super easy and is so delightful on these hot and muggy days!  Take the cabbage leaves off the cabbage and blanch them (put in boiling water for 30 seconds then in an ice bath for 30 seconds and lay to dry).  Cut-up the leftover cabbage (approx. 1 cup), shred a couple carrots, dice a green onion, and add avocado if you have any.  Cut some cilantro in the mixture and add approx 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or whatever you have on hand), lime juice and lime zest, salt and pepper.  Place mixture in cabbage leaves, roll up, and serve with soy sauce with a dash of red pepper flakes.  Sooo yummy, I should have taken a picture!!

Chili-Lime Corn on the Cob (I personally like my corn grilled with just a bit of butter and salt, but if you want to spice things up try this recipe out!)

Roasted Carrot and Black Bean Tacos (Carrot greens are safe to eat in small amounts!)

Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Grilled Veggies (I made this recipe and the first day put it over a bed of greens, so refreshing, and the second day I used the leftovers and made a sandwich topped with avocado mash, good two days two ways!!)

*The reason there are a couple carrot recipes listed this week is because I've been harvesting carrots everyday from our backyard garden!!*

As always, we appreciate your support of the market, by coming out each week and shopping locally YOU keep the farmers' market here in Indiana.  See you soon!
