Market Preview Sept 3 & 6

The Kid's Tent was a HUGE success at the market on Saturday, around 30 kids stopped by and made their own ice cream with the help of IUP dietetic interns and the Department of Food and Nutrition professor Jodie Seybold! We had a new artist, Richard Roberts, who had some fantastic abstract work made from wax. The League of Women Voters was also present in our Community Tent registering community members to vote!

Returning this week to our Wednesday market, you will be able to have a FREE blood pressure screening thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge.  This Saturday we do not have anyone scheduled in our Artist, Musician, Community, or Kid's Tent.  We are starting to schedule events in our extra tents for September and October. If you are interested in participating in one of our tents, please email us at indianafarmmarket@gmail.com.  If you know of anyone or any organization that would be interested in participating in a Saturday market, please spread the word that we are scheduling now!

There is an exciting event happening in downtown Indiana that you should definitely check out after the market Saturday morning!  Starting at 10 AM on Saturday is the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival.  Some of our vendors will be selling at this festival rather than at the market on Saturday.  This event starts Friday evening and runs all day and into the night Saturday. A wonderful event that brings live music, arts, crafts, and foods to the heart of downtown! Check out their website to see a full schedule of events and activities, Northern Appalachian Folk Festival.

Market Preview August 27 & 30

The rain held off this week for both of our market days, and we noticed some new customers at our Saturday market, possibly IUP students and parents in for the move-in weekend. We hope with IUP back in session, we will be seeing more students frequent the market, a great healthy community oriented event that everyone can enjoy!  On Saturday we had a lot of interest in our Community Tent where Master Food Preserver, Marcy Cunkelman, discussed the appropriate ways to preserve summer's harvest. We hope to have Marcy attend the market again later in the season when people are getting ready to start canning late summer produce!  Our musician, Tim Ball's One-Man-Band, was rocking all market and our customers really appreciated his playing!

Again this week at the Wednesday market you will be able to have a FREE blood pressure screening thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge. ***Wednesday we will still have the market even though it's fair week and our parking lot is used for fair parking. You will find us in our same lot, just moved slightly towards the Wayne Avenue side (rather than the Hospital Road side) to accommodate for fair parking. Just look for our market tents!***  This Saturday we will have the League of Women Voters in our Community Tent, new artist Richard Roberts in our Artisan Tent, and Food Science fun in our Kid's Tent brought to you by IUP Food and Nutrition Professor Jodie Seybold!

Market Preview August 20th & 23rd

Basket winner
Face paint
We would like to thank all of our wonderful customers who came out and supported the market for our annual Customer Appreciation Event! It was a great success! We gave away 100 reusable farmers' market tote bags, samples upon samples of sweet peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, bread, pepper jelly and relish, and apples, and Cassandra Williams was our lucky winner out of more than 100 entries of the market basket giveaway!  It was quite the basket and arm-full!!  Amanda Brubaker, the 2013 Indiana County Fair Queen, distributed fair handouts and painted dozens of faces in our Kid's Tent.  Our musician, Christian, was joined by fellow musicians throughout the morning and put on quite the lively and entertaining show all market (he didn't sit down once!!). And our artisan sold a number of her handmade rugs, a unique art tent to the market this season!  It was our busiest Saturday yet and we thank you for your continuous support!
For the next two Wednesdays we will have FREE blood pressure screenings at the market thanks to nurses from Beacon Ridge.  We also wanted to be sure that you know during fair week (8/24-8/30) we WILL still be at our Wednesday location, which is used as a parking lot for the fair, so be sure to stop by!  This Saturday we will have a Master Food Preserver at the market teaching proper techniques and distributing handouts on ways to preserve summer's bounty of produce, this should be an educational demonstration that I know many of us will appreciate!  Our artist and musician tents will be filled this Saturday and our Kid's Tent will have Gatti Pharmacy with children's activities and handouts, be sure to check it out!

Each week I set-up and take down our 4 extra tents (Kids, Community, Artisan, and Musician), but once September rolls around you may find these tents vacant because I will be on leave due to the upcoming arrival of a new baby.  We are trying to think of a place to safely leave these tents near the Saturday market site so we can continue to schedule events in the tents, but have our tent occupants set them up and take them down themselves. We'd like to store them somewhere close by so the tents could continue to be set up, but we are not sure where.  If you have any suggestions, we would be glad to hear them! I've been happy to schedule all these events this season, and hope to continue once I take a leave of absence with the new baby.  Hopefully I'll see you at the market Saturday, it all depends on this baby's time table now!  Thanks for your words of encouragement, they are appreciated!

One of my favorite go-to recipes for this time of year is quick, simple, and can be eaten many ways!  It's fresh hot peppers (hungarian wax, banana peppers, etc) chopped up with fresh diced tomatoes (cherry, cocktail, or larger tomatoes), with a drizzle of olive oil, 2 cloves of garlic, and fresh herbs of your choice (I like parsley and basil).  Serve this over lettuce, eat it plain, or my favorite on a thick slice of italian bread!!!  Enjoy :)

Market Preview August 6 & 9

This week is National Farmers Market week, and a way to celebrate is to come out and support your local farmers market! You can go to this website and pledge to spend money at the Indiana County Farmers' Market and receive a free "No Farms No Food" bumper sticker for pledging, and then take the next step and come on out to our Wednesday and Saturday markets and shop locally!! I Love My Farmers Market celebration!

As promised here is what you can expect at our annual Customer Appreciation Day, this year scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, 9:00-noon.  Our taste testing event this year will feature a produce favorite that is as versatile in taste as it is in ways to prepare it, but we like it raw the best. It comes in many colors, green, yellow, red, orange, purple, and more! It even has it's own scale for heat, that's right, it's peppers!!  From hot to sweet, we'll have the freshest peppers around for you to sample, along with pepper relish from Natalie's Goodies and bread and cucumbers from Country Bread Barn and 3 Ponds Farm to help soothe your mouth if you dare to try a hot one!!!  Along with the samples, we will be giving away Indiana County Farmers' Market reusable shopping bags to the first 100 market customers filled with a PA produce cookbook, market recipes, and buying local handouts! It should be a wonderful event, so come early and stay awhile, thank you for supporting your local farmers' market!!

Last Saturday at the market we saw two groups of children participate in yoga demonstrated by Ed Stancombe of Sunflower Yoga Studios.  In our Community Tent the First UU Church raised awareness and money for their Stop Hunger campaign, and we had a nice turnout of customers on the beautifully sunny morning.

This Saturday at the market we will have the Indiana Garden Club in our Kid's Tent with some take home garden goodies for our children customers! Our Community Tent will feature the Seed Bank where you can learn more about their mission and the seed swap they are planning!! And our Artisan Tent will feature two artists who were here at the very beginning of the market season, Ashely Bouton and Tyler Rahl, be sure to stop by and check out their awesome paintings!!

One of our vendors, Janet Huber, had customers who were interested in ways to prepare zucchini, so here is a recipe that she had from her mother, a zucchini casserole that uses a lot of other market produce along with the famed zucchini!  Zucchini Casserole
